PRACTICE RELATIONSHIPS
Harley & Murray have been working in the Stirling Area since
the practice was first formed in 1983. Over the years the partners
and staff have built a very healthy working relationship with the
Council Development Staff and Building Control. This relationship
has grown in recent years and we have now extended our links to
work more closely with the Civic Services Building Projects Section,
Housing Services, Children's Services, and the Estates and Property
Section.
We have also worked very successfully with the local housing associations
and Scottish Homes personnel and our local site knowledge has proved
invaluable with Local Developers and Contractors. Close links with
all the
above development staff have led to a better understanding of each
others aspirations and a harmonious working relationship already
exists with our Practice. This can only benefit the progress and
quality of any new developments in the area.

disadvantages are, it will take a little longer to download
the picture, the picture is a little smaller, and your browser
must be Java enabled.
Please
note that pictures will take 20 to 30 seconds to load if you
have a 28kb modem, less if you have a faster modem.

THE PARTNERS
Bill Harley and Glenn Murray founded the Practice in June 1983 and operated
initially from a small office in the High Street in Dunblane. Both partners
had previously worked together in the Glasgow offices of Baxter, Clark
& Paul and Watson, Salmond & Gray while studying to qualify from
the Mackintosh School of Architecture.
Both partners have maintained a hands on approach to all the commissions
awarded to the Practice and have a wealth of experience in most aspects
of the Construction Industry and have developed a large Client/Project
Base.
Each partner has acquired specialist skills which can be attributed to
their direct involvement in varying types of projects. The area of common
specialism has been dominated by the Practice's continued involvement
in all aspects of Social and Community Housing Projects which have always
formed a high percentage of the workload over the 18 year lifespan of
the partnership.
BILL HARLEY
For the past 15 years Bill has worked closely with Community Groups in
regeneration projects in Coatbridge, Castlemilk & Clydebank.
He has particular experience in working in large communities which have
a history of social disadvantaged and poor housing. To be successful the
projects required a close involvement with all community groups and Harley
& Murray have proved very successful in communicating with the local
people and transferring the needs and aspirations into completed projects
which hopefully offered a fresh start to these previously disadvantaged
areas.
Over this period of being involved in major urban regeneration, Bill
has also been adapting the designs to suit the changing requirements of
both the clients body and major funders (Scottish Homes). The practice
in general has been at the forefront of developing sustainable Housing
and Housing for varying needs.
GLENN MURRAY
Glenn has experience in the design and construction of a number of different
building category types. These include Commercial, Industrial, Residential,
Educational, Domestic and Leisure and Recreational buildings. A number
of his more recently completed projects have greatly enhanced the practice
range of specialisms and these areas are listed below and are particularly
relevant to the building categories involved in the Raploch Regeneration
Project.
1. Community Housing Projects
Glenn has been an integral member of the Rural Stirling New Housing Partnership
project team since its inception. This has created an opportunity to gain
experience and greater involvement in the entire procurement and design
and development process. A close relationship has developed between all
the parties involved and this has been particularly beneficial when working
regularly with the development staff of the Council, Housing Association
and Scottish Homes.
The projects within the New Housing Partnership which we have been involved
are listed below:
- Burnside, Kippen
- Mansefield, Tyndrum
- Lagrannoch, Callander
- Fingal Road, Killin
- Moray Street, Doune
2. Private Housing Projects
The design of private housing developments for local developers has always
played a major role in sustaining the growth of the practice and this
aspect of our workload has helped develop an expertise in this very competitive
field.
3. Education Projects
Two major school refurbishment projects have recently been completed by
the practice. One was for the private sector at St. Mary's Episcopal Primary
School in Dunblane, the other was at East Plean Primary School for Stirling
Council Civic Services. Both projects demanded detailed pre-construction
involvement with the users and Council representatives to ensure that
a suitable phased decanting and strategy plan could be devised to allow
each school to continue functioning on the same site throughout the construction
period.
